KANSAS CITY, Missouri – A fund has been set up to help the families of two fallen Kansas City firefighters.
Crews were dispatched to a building on the northeast side of town around 7:30 p.m. Monday. He says firefighters found the building that includes apartments heavily damaged, and they evacuated people from inside.
Fire Department Battalion Chief James Garrett says firefighters were clearing an area with a partially collapsed roof when the structure collapsed further, injuring four of them. Two later died.
The deceased firefighters have been identified as:
- 17 year veteran, Fire Apparatus Operator Larry J. Leggio, age 43, of Truck 2 who leaves behind a wife and mother; and
- 13 year veteran, Firefighter John V. Mesh, age 39, of Pumper 10 who leaves a wife and four young daughters.
A fund to support the families of fallen firefighters is available through IAFF Local 42. Tax-deductible donations will be given to the families of firefighters Leggio and Mesh.
