Cause of east Wichita apartment fire under investigation

WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita firefighters responded to the scene of an apartment fire in the 9200 block of East Harry at noon on Saturday.

Wichita Fire Department Battalion Chief Andy Cole said when firefighters first arrived on the scene at the Buttonwood Tree apartment complex at 9211 E. Harry they reported seeing smoke and flames coming from a second floor apartment.  Cole said firefighters found a fire inside the front room of the apartment.

Cole said the call to 911 was first reported as an oxygen tank explosion, but that the cause of the blaze is still under investigation

A woman who lived in the apartment was able to get out of the apartment without injury. Firefighters reported a cat died in the fire.

The fire caused between $50,000 and $60,000 damage to the building and its contents.
