WICHITA, Kansas – Wichita police and fire crews responded to two separate calls of suspected arson in south Wichita early Saturday.
The first call was from an officer who reported a fire at 2:40 a.m. near the 2100 block of South Silver.
Crews arrived to find a vehicle on fire in the driveway of one home. Another vehicle was engulfed in flames a few houses further south. Investigators report that several vehicles at the scene had apparently been rummaged through.
Autumn Sommers and her siblings were asleep in their bedroom while the car was on fire outside their window.
“She saw fire outside of our window, so she woke me up, I looked outside and the car was on fire,” said Sommers.
The car’s owner, Christopher Donohue says his dad heard the horn going off and immediately woke him up.
Donohue was stunned when he saw his car engulfed in flames.
“I was like who would do something like this? I mean if you see the house next to me, they’re are three kids sleeping in that bedroom right there,” said Donohue.
At 3:20 a.m. another vehicle fire was reported in the 2200 block of South Osage. By the time crews arrived, two vehicles were on fire in the neighborhood with one fire threatened a nearby house.
Sgt, Brian Sigman with the Wichita police department says they suspect arson.
“Close proximity to each other and the time element there, we’re thinking they’re definitely probably connected,” said Sgt. Sigman.
Crews were able to get all four vehicle fires under control. No injuries are reported in connection with any of the fires.
Police and fire are still investigating.
