KALAMAZOO, Michigan (WOOD) — The Western Michigan University Broncos surprised one of their football players with a full-ride scholarship.
P.J. Fleck, the head coach at WMU, coaches and recruits with energy few can match, and he does it with a bit of flair. That was demonstrated in video posted on the football team’s YouTube channel on Thursday.
During an on-side kick drill at the Broncos’ practice, Fleck instructed his kicker to aim the ball toward junior Trevor Sweeney. Sweeney, of Mattawan, is a walk-on who has played on special teams for two years.
When he recovered the ball, he found a letter from Fleck wrapped around it offering him the scholarship. His teammates rushed to congratulate him, lifting him up on their shoulders.
“I couldn’t be prouder to award you and your family a full ride scholarship,” Sweeney read from the letter, as his teammates erupted into cheers. “There isn’t a member of this family that’s more deserving of this award than you. Thank you from all of us for believing in the row-the-boat lifestyle and exemplifying what it means to be a Bronco. We love you, Sweeney.”
