LIVINGSTON COUNTY, Michigan – Actress Melissa Gilbert has announced she’s running for Congress.

Gilbert will run as a Democrat against Republican Congressman Mike Bishop, who currently serves Michigan’s 8th Congressional District.

The former ‘Little House on the Prairie’ star says she believes “supporting working families means building an economy that works for everyone.”

Gilbert announced her intent to run via Twitter, where she wrote “Excited to announce my run for U.S. Congress in Michigan’s 8th. Please join me in my fight for working families.”

The Michigan Republican Party responded to Gilbert’s announcement, asking if she can be trusted. The party referenced a Detroit News story that reveals the actress owes about $360,000 to the IRS.

Mike Bishop’s campaign spokesperson Stu Sandler says Gilbert’s values are “out of whack.” “Hollywood Actress and IRS Tax Cheat Melissa Gilbert owes hundreds of thousands to the IRS and wants to get a government paycheck. Melissa Gilbert can afford to have a stylist for her dog, but cannot pay her taxes. Her values are out of whack with the district,” said Sandler.
