WICHITA, Kansas – A 39-year-old woman is dead after a train struck her Friday morning. It happened around 6:50 a.m. at 31st Street and K-15.
Authorities say the woman was walking northbound on the track when the train coming from the south hit her. Authorities say she was wearing headphones and didn’t hear the train.
“She never by any indications heard or saw the train coming. She never looked back at the train. The train couldn’t get stopped in time,” said Sgt. James Krok, Wichita Police Department.
The train’s conductor apparently saw a man walking near the tracks but didn’t see the woman.
“A gentleman that we talked to on the side of the road that was initially walking with her up this way, she walked a lot faster than he was. He was able to take us to an area to another neighborhood which enabled us to get an ID,” said Krok.
Police say the woman’s identity won’t be released until next of kin is contacted.
Meanwhile, authorities say you shouldn’t walk on the tracks.
“That is railroad property. These accidents could be prevented,” added Krok.
