WICHITA, Kansas – Wichita police released more information Monday about a shooting in North Wichita Friday night that left one man dead. The incident happened in the 1600 block of North Lorraine around 9:30 p.m.

Police say 42-year-old Bill Massey went into the home with his 17-year-old son to gather some belongings of an 18-year-old girl who was waiting outside with her 35-year-mother.

The home belonged to the 18-year-old girl’s ex-boyfriend. Both recently broke up.

“Mr. Massey and his son went up to the residence and knocked on the front door and were let in by the 18-year-old female’s ex-boyfriend. At that point in time, it is believed Mr. Massey produced a handgun pointing it at this male,” said Lt. Todd Ojile, Wichita Police Department.

Once inside the 18-year-old man’s 21-year-old roommate saw Massey with the gun.

“The roommate retrieved a gun near his location and fired shots at Mr. Massey striking him,” said Lt. Todd Ojile.

Massey died at the hospital. The 21-year-old left the home. He was located in the 1700 block of South Oliver after he called police.

After interviewing more than 20 people, the 21-year-old was not booked into jail. Police believe it was a case of self-defense.

The investigation is ongoing. The case will be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney.
