STATE COLLEGE, Penn. – A homeless man in Pennsylvania made an unusual find– a purse with nearly $400 inside. But instead of keeping the money, he decided to find the owner and return it.
The interesting – and unlikely – part of the story is how the woman got her wallet back.
The man who found the person didn’t want to be identified. But he was willing to talk.
“I was waiting to go to an AA meeting over across at St. Andrews, saw dollars on the bench when I walked over,” he said.
He said that he’s originally from Boston and has been living on the streets of State College, Pennsylvania for several weeks.
The man said he was broke when he found the purse.
“I have nothing in my pockets right now,” he said.
But that didn’t stop him from making the right choice.
He opened up the wallet, saw the cash and an access card and knew the rightful owner was also down on her luck.
When asked if there was a split second when he thought he could take the cash, he said, “Of course, of course. I just thought I wouldn’t have been good on my conscience, and somebody might not have known, but I would have known. God would have known.”
Instead, he contacted a local homeless shelter that then tracked down the woman. And, it turns out, she’s a single mother fighting brain cancer.
“That broke me down a little bit, it broke me down a little bit,” the man said.
Although neither party wanted their meeting put on video, it it was filled with thank yous, hugs and smiles.
The woman says her whole life was inside her little bag, and she couldn’t put it into words how grateful she was to have it back safely.
“I’m trying to be honorable to God. I’ve lived a life taking a lot,” said the man who wanted to do the honorable thing.
