HUTCHINSON, Kansas – A 68-year-old man died Friday afternoon after a canoe capsized during an outing the three other people.

The Reno County Sheriff’s Office reports Jerry Patton of Hutchinson was canoeing on the Arkansas River with his 38-year-old son and his 12- and 10-year-old granddaughters when one of the two canoes they were in capsized.

After Sheriff’s deputies received a call from family members who reported the canoeists were overdue at their destination, they received a phone call from a 36-year-old man who had been in the canoe.

Sheriff Randy Henderson said Rescue crews had trouble reaching the canoe because of muddy conditions along the river.

Henderson says after the canoe capsized, Patton struggled in the water and was having difficulty breathing.

When Patton finally was rescued, he was taken to a Wichita hospital where he died around 3 p.m.
