WICHITA, Kansas – Wichita State guards Ron Baker and Fred VanVleet have accepted invitations to attend Team USA’s Training Camp, July 7-12 in Colorado Springs, and will compete for an opportunity to represent the United States at the Pan American Games in late July.
Professional players who are not currently under NBA contract as well as returning college players are eligible for the team.
Following training camp, the team will practice from July 13-16 in Chicago before moving on to Toronto
to begin competition.
The U.S. is scheduled to face Venezuela, Puerto Rico and Brazil in group play on July 21, 22 and 23.
The top two teams advance to semifinals on July 24 with the medal round to follow on July 25.
The Pan-American games is a multi-sport event held every four years in the year prior to the Olympic Games. The basketball portion of the event will include an eight-team tournament, featuring some of the best players in North, South and Central America.
Team USA has not earned a gold medal in men’s basketball since 1983, when Michael Jordan was a member of the squad. WSU has never had a player on the final Pan-Am games roster.
Mark Few of Gonzaga will serve as head coach, assisted by Colorado’s Tad Boyle and former NBA head coach Mike Brown.
Two players from the team will also be selected for the 2016 Select Team, which will train with the 2016 Olympic Team.
