Derby emergency crews to receive PETA award

DERBY, Kansas – PETA announced Tuesday that they will be awarding the Derby fire and police departments an award for saving a dog who was stuck under a slab for nearly two weeks.

The award is being presented for their action in helping to rescue Lucy, a dachshund who had been missing for 13 days before being found trapped beneath a concrete slab.

“This dog spent a horrific 13 days trapped under concrete, waiting for someone to find and help her—and thanks to Derby’s first responders, she was reunited with her family just in time for her birthday,” says PETA Senior Director Colleen O’Brien. “PETA hopes these rescuers’ immediate response will inspire others to come to the aid of animals in need.”

PETA will be sending both departments a framed certificate and box of vegan cookies.
