WICHITA, Kan. – The Wichita State baseball team reeled off three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on Sunday to help defeat New Mexico 6-5 and sweep the three-game series.
Leading the way, Sam Hilliard went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two triples, while Trey Vickers finished 1-for-1 with two RBIs.
Reliever Chandler Sanburn earned the win. He pitched 2.2 shutout innings, while John Hayes threw two shutout innings for his second save.
On the mound, Hilliard went four innings and gave up two runs on six hits with two walks and one strikeout.
The Shocks will return to action on Tuesday, April 28th when they host the Oklahoma Sooners at 7 p.m.
In women’s action, the WSU softball team swept Evansville 5-2 Sunday at Wilkins Stadium on Senior Day. Brianne Bond, Erin Carney, Layne Greenlee, and Melanie Jaegers were the four Wichita State seniors who were honored before the game.
With Sunday’s sweep, WSU improved to 32-21 (14-10 MVC), while Evansville dropped to 10-42 (2-21 MVC). Since March 28, the Shockers have won 15 of their last 18 games overall, including 13 of their last 16 Missouri Valley Conference matchups.
Pitching standout Katie Malone picked up her 18th win of the season, moving her into a tie for eighth place on the all-time wins list in a single season.
