WICHITA, Kansas – Tuesday’s city council meeting proved to be a special one for former Mayor Carl Brewer as he stepped down from his office.

A video tribute shown went over Brewer’s accomplishments as mayor including playing a key role in the downtown renovation project, Dwight D. Eisenhower’s new terminal, and the fair fares program.

At the podium, Brewer choked up, telling the crowd of the importance of the relationship between the mayor and city council members.

After being sworn in, Mayor Jeff Longwell spoke about the need for a better transit system, our weakening water supply, and the future of job creation in the city of Wichita.

“One of the big tasks, certainly is going to be tackling jobs. I’ve said this before that we need to fundamentally change the way that we grow jobs in our community, and it’s my hope that we bring back the spirit of Wichita,” said Mayor Jeff Longwell.

The first order of business for the new mayor and city council members was to vote for a vice mayor. James Clendenin was the unanimous decision.
