DALLAS (AP) – Former President George W. Bush visited SMU on Monday, congratulating the Mustangs on their first NCAA Tournament berth since 1993.

Bush spent a few minutes in their locker room before practice. He said he was able to talk to his favorite team, calling them “the mighty Mustangs.”

Moody Coliseum is across the street from the former president’s library. Bush lives in Dallas, not far from the SMU campus and he and his wife, Laura, have attended some games.

When asked how far SMU could go in the tournament, Bush said he’s no pro at prognosticating basketball. But he said he knows a good team, and called SMU a good team.

Coach Larry Brown says Bush congratulated the team and told them how proud he was of them for playing together.

SMU will play UCLA in the South Region on Thursday.
