Wichita has 7,304 false alarm calls since October

WICHITA, Kansas – Since Oct. 1, 2014, the City of Wichita has had over 7,643 alarm calls. Of those, only 339 were valid.  The numbers are down from the year before, when the city had 8,116 false alarms.

The three main causes of false alarms are: 1) user error, 2) installation/service errors, and 3) equipment failure.

  • False alarms are costly and dangerous because they divert emergency personnel from crime and fire prevention efforts in addition to denying response to true emergency calls.
  • More than 80 percent of all false alarms are caused by user error. Here are some additional causes.

Major Causes of False Security Alarms:

  • Unlocked or loose doors/ windows
  • Children, neighbors and visitors inadvertently setting the alarm off or not knowing the code
  • Cleaning Crews/ repairmen/ pet sitters
  • Pets or other wildlife
  • Equipment malfunction

Major Causes of False Fire Alarms:

  • Fumes from overcooked food, including burnt popcorn
  • Steam from showers
  • Dust from construction work
  • Incorrect or poorly designed systems
  • Equipment malfunction
  • Tampering with the fire alarm system

The Wichita Police and Fire Departments are reminding residents to take some simple steps to protect themselves and their property as they change their clocks for Daylight Savings this weekend.  Residents are encouraged to change the batteries and test their smoke alarms as well as take precautions to ensure they don’t have false security alarms.
