WICHITA, Kansas – With a long list of accomplishments including teaching numerous students how to save lives, a local P.E. teacher’s officially being recognized for her vast efforts involving area youth.
Wichita South’s Amy Sommers has been named the Central District High School Physical Education Teacher of the Year by SHAPE America. She’ll be honored at the organization’s National Convention and Expo later this month in Seattle.
Lending her expertise in several areas, Sommers has certified countless students to becomes lifeguards and taught CPR.
Sommers told KSN, “I had one student come back and said he was able to save his own dad’s life. His father had a heart attack, he called 911. Because he had taken a class, he was able to perform CPR on his dad.”
In addition to life-saving skills, Sommers would also soon like to help kids train in running marathons.
