COWLEY COUNTY, Kansas – A child was critically injured Friday morning from a ricocheting bullet in Cowley County. It happened around 11:30 a.m. in Maple City.

Craig Andres is in Cowley County and reports that the eight-year-old was target shooting with an adult using a .22-caliber rifle when someone shot at a metal trailer and the bullet apparently ricocheted and struck the child in the chest.

The child transported by personal car and met halfway to the hospital by an ambulance. He was originally listed in critical condition but is now stable and is being transported to a Wichita hospital.

Law enforcement officials tell KSN that this is considered an accident and that shooting weapons in the country is not uncommon.

The child is a student in the Dexter school system which utilizes a four-day school week due to budget restraints. Dexter schools released a statement saying they would not be giving out any information about the child.
