CANEY, Kansas – A volunteer firefighter in southeast Kansas has died in the line of duty.

It happened in Caney when crews responded to the call of a grass fire Wednesday afternoon.

55-year-old Cliff Sanders had a stroke at the fire station. He was taken to a Tulsa hospital where he died early yesterday morning.

A colleague of Sanders says it’s the first line-of-duty death, since the volunteer department was formed back in 1898.
