Police: Man torched apartment over eviction

CEDARHURST, N.Y. (AP) — Police in New York say a Long Island man torched his apartment and forced the evacuation of his entire building because he was about to be evicted.

The fire happened yesterday in a 57-unit building in Cedarhurst.

Nassau County police say 53-year-old Douglas Drummond lit eight separate fires in his apartment because he was angry that he was being evicted.

Firefighters managed to contain the fire to Drummond’s third-floor apartment but several other apartments sustained water damage.

The building was evacuated while firefighters battled the blaze. Several tenants were displaced.

Drummond and a man in a neighboring apartment were treated for smoke inhalation at a local hospital.

Drummond was arrested on a charge of second-degree arson.
