NEW YORK (AP) — About 100 friends and relatives of a New York City police officer who was gunned down along with his partner have lined up outside a Queens church a full hour before his wake is set to begin.

The mourners are the first of hundreds of friends, relatives and fellow officers expected to pay their respects to Officer Rafael Ramos on Friday afternoon.

In the evening, hundreds more are expected when the wake at Christ Tabernacle Church in the Glendale section of Queens opens to the public.

Ramos’ funeral is scheduled for Saturday. Vice President Joe Biden is expected to attend.

Ramos was killed in a brazen daytime ambush on Dec. 20 along with Officer Wenjian Liu as they sat in their patrol car on a Brooklyn street. The shooter later killed himself.

Authorities say Ismaaiyl Brinsley, who vowed online to shoot two “pigs” in retaliation for the police chokehold death of Eric Garner, ambushed Ramos in Liu in a patrol car Saturday, Dec. 20, 2014, and fatally shot them in broad daylight before running to a subway station and killing himself.
