Derby police seek men in attempted child abduction

DERBY, Kansas – Derby police are looking for a pair of men who they say tried to grab a 3-year old girl, as she walked down the street with her mom. The mother says she was able to fight off the man. Now police are looking for a black van used in the alleged attempted child abduction.

It began as a routine walk to the convenience store for Derby mom Aley Carson who says she was being followed by two men in a black van. They asked her if she wanted some candy and cookies. When she refused the offer, the passenger, white man in his 30’s got out of the van.

“He grabbed the three year old daughter by the shoulders then she was successful  in defending her child, she struck the man twice he got back in the van which was also driven by a second white male and the black van left westbound,” said derby police chief Robert Lee.

We caught up with the mom on the phone who claims to of fought off the man she says tried to take her daughter.

“One of the guys came out of the van and grabbed my daughter my 3 year old daughter who is not in a stroller by the arm I turned around and I punched him in the face and he wouldn’t let go,” said Aley Carson.

Carson says she and her daughter were both injured during the brief encounter.

“I kicked him in the groin and picked up my daughter I have a fractured pinky finger from punching the guy I broke my toe when I kicked him,” Carson said.

Police are taking this investigation very seriously. At the same time they are asking the public to not overreact.

“Events like this are extremely rare but when they do happen it’s obviously a very serious situation we take it very seriously I don’t encourage panic or anything like that, just be vigilant,” Lee said.

At approximately 10:20 a.m. on Wednesday, a woman reported the attempted abduction of her 3-year-old child in the 200 block of East Kay in Derby.

The woman was walking with her two children and noticed a black van following them. The van pulled alongside the woman and asked if they wanted candy or cookies. The woman declined.

The van stopped and the passenger exited the van and grabbed her three-year old by the shoulders. The man is described as a white male in his 30s, 5’7 to 6’ tall, slender build, blonde hair, wearing a tan T-shirt, blue jeans and tan shoes. The woman struck the man twice and he let go of the child and returned to the van. The van was driven by a white male with facial hair. The suspects left the scene westbound towards K-15.

The van is black, in good condition, unknown make, with at least three rows of seats. It was described as a church van, which are usually 15-passenger vans.

The Derby Police Department is asking for the public’s help identifying these suspects. Anyone with information should contact the Derby Police Department at 788-1557, 911, or submit an anonymous tip to Derby Crime Stoppers at 788-TIPS (788-8477).
