Police identify man killed in officer-involved shooting

HAYSVILLE, Kansas – Haysville police on Wednesday identified the man who died in an officer-involved shooting as 40-year-old Chad Leichardt.

It happened in the 400 block of West Sarah Lane at Village Lake Apartments just before 11 a.m. Tuesday.

Police say the suspect and the victim were arguing for hours.

When police arrived on the scene, they say the suspect was threatening the woman with a knife.

Police say he had barricaded himself in a bedroom of an apartment and that the victim was bleeding from knife wounds.

Officers asked Leichardt to drop the knife. He continued to threaten the victim and officers.

Officers fired one striking Leichardt. He died.

The woman in the home was taken to the hospital with injuries. She was treated and released.

Police say there have been two cases of domestic violence between the suspect and the victim in the past.

Jeff Whitfield with the Haysville Police Department says three officers are being put on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
