WICHITA, Kansas — Beginning Friday, August 15th at 7 p.m., two ramps north of West Central Avenue and I-235 will close for eight weeks for construction on the 13th Street bridge over the Wichita-Valley Center Floodway.
The two ramps to close include the exit from southbound I-235 to West Central Ave and the entrance ramp from West Central to I-235 northbound.
The ramp closures will allow construction of acceleration and deceleration lanes to and from the bridges under construction that tie into West 13th Street.
A marked detour will direct southbound I-235 traffic wanting to access Central to exit onto westbound U.S. 54 (Kellogg) and continue to Ridge Road, then north to Central.
A marked detour for Central traffic wanting to go north on I-235 will be directed to northbound West Street, then detour to Zoo Boulevard to I-235.
To facilitate the placement of concrete barrier on both directions of I-235 north of Central, I-235 traffic will be reduced to a single lane in each direction from 7 pm on Friday evening until late afternoon on Saturday. The ramps closures will begin at 7 pm on Friday and continue for at least eight weeks.
The Kansas Department of Transportation highway interchange project (with project sponsorship by the City of Wichita) adds a ramp from eastbound 13th Street east of Ridge Road to southbound I-235 and a ramp from northbound I-235 to westbound 13th Street. The project is expected to reduce traffic congestion at the I-235 and Zoo Boulevard interchange and will add another route for crossing the Wichita – Valley Center Floodway.
