WICHITA, Kansas – With Normal Williams retiring as chief of police, it’s up to the city manager, Robert Layton, to hire a new chief.

“Well, we are his boss,” says city council member Janet Miller. “The City Manager will make the decision, but we will be involved in the process, yes.”

Miller says you can expect an interim chief to be named, soon.

“I would be surprised if this were not happening within a week,” says Miller. “But, it’s going to happen soon.”

As for a new, permanent chief, that could take some time.

“Certainly, we want to get someone who is a good fit,” says Miller. ” It’s hard to see good people go. On the other hand, Chief Williams has served our community admirably for nearly 40-years, and nearly fifteen years as chief.”
