JAMUL, California (AP) – A skydiver has plunged to his death in San Diego County.

U-T San Diego said the man died in a jump around 10:30 a.m. Wednesday near the Otay Lakes.

Authorities haven’t determined why his parachute didn’t open. His name hasn’t been released.

Buzz Fink, who owns Skydive San Diego, says the man – who’s believed to be in his late 40s or 50s – had taken off that morning with other parachutists but he wasn’t part of their group.

Fink says the man had brand new equipment that included a device that automatically deploys the chute in an emergency.
