Police investigate hit-and-run that killed 3 early Sunday

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – Three people are dead after being struck by a vehicle at an intersection early Sunday morning.

It happened around 2 a.m. at the intersection of Maple and Tracy.

Sgt. Merrick of the Wichita Police Department told KSN News a Chevy with five occupants was heading north on Tracy and had the green light at the intersection when a Ford Expedition ran the red light going east on Maple and hit the Chevy broadside.

When police arrived on the scene, they found three people lying on the ground and two trapped inside the Chevy.

Three of the passengers in the backseat were ejected from the car and were pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers said that at least two of the passengers in the backseat were not wearing seat belts.

The driver of the Chevy and the front seat passenger were cut out of the vehicle and taken to the hospital.

The driver was in critical condition and the front seat passenger is in serious condition.

The driver of the Ford fled the scene on foot to the southeast but was later located and taken into custody.

Police are investigating the possibility of alcohol, but say it is too early to determine to the extent.

Dispatch says more information will be provided on Monday as the incident is still under investigation.
