Second victim dies from injuries sustained in Plymell home explosion

WICHITA, Kansas – A second person has died from injuries sustained in a house explosion in Plymell.

The explosion happened on June 28th.

Riley Unruh died Tuesday at Via Christi St. Francis in Wichita.

He is the younger brother of 17-year-old Spencer Unruh who died at the scene.

Their mother, Kelly Unruh, is still in critical condition.

The State Fire Marshal’s office, along with the Finney County Sheriff’s office, and the Garden City Fire Department, have narrowed down the cause.

“Through the investigation it was determined that the probable cause of the explosion was due to a concentration of natural gas,” said Garden City Fire Department Chief Allen Shelton.

Family members said in a statement that they were saddened by Riley’s death but rejoice that he is now in heaven with his Savior and his brother.

“The outpouring of emotions and prayers have been a little bit overwhelming for the family, so I’d like to express my thanks, and convey their thanks as well,” said Benjamin Unruh.

So far, the family has received over $35,000 in donations for medical expenses through a donation site.
