WICHITA, Kansas – The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Department says a 25-year-old man died after riding on top of a car.

It happened early Sunday morning in the 21000 block of West 47th Street South.

A 27-year-old Wichita man was driving a 1994 Chrysler when a 25-year-old man, identified at Duane M. Patterson, rode on top of the car.

Patterson fell off.

The driver and passenger stopped and put Patterson in the car.

They drove him to the hospital where he died a short time later.

“Obviously, the dangers of surfing on top of a car is extreme, not only for the person on top of the car, but the driver of the car is responsible for all occupants of car and need to control all occupants of the car,” said Lt. David Mattingly, Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Department.

Officials plan to pursue charges against the driver of the car.

“Charges will be sought in this case. That’s the risk you run,” said Mattingly. “People think you can go out and do fun things. We all did silly things when we were younger, but these things can happen. Obviously, we now have someone who died because of it.”
