Inmate still at large when released from jail by mistake

WICHITA, Kansas – The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Department says an inmate was released by mistake.

Chad Alan Engel was released Tuesday at 2 p.m.

Engel was being transferred to the McPherson County Jail on a drug warrant.

Authorites say a detention corporal thought Engel was being released from custody because he was in street clothes.

He was escorted out of jail.

“Booking staff immediately realized the mistake and notified law enforcement. Several agencies assisted in looking for Engel, but he was not located,” said Lt. David Mattingly, Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Department. “We are looking into how this happened so we can correct any procedures in place. It seems like a simple mistake but with serious consequences.”

Engel has an active drug warrant in McPherson County.

If you see Engel, you are asked to call authorities.
