WICHITA, Kansas – Wichita police say they have a man in custody suspected of rape at a Wichita park.
A 31-year-old woman was attacked and raped while jogging at East View Park near 13th and Governeour on June 13th.
Police say the suspect approached the victim with a knife and sexually assaulted her.
She was able to call 911, and police began their investigation.
Ten days later, a citizen called 911 to report a suspicious person near the same park.
Officers were able to locate 44-year-old Benton Baskin and connect him to the rape through evidence collected.
“Yeah, certainly we don’t want a serial attacker out there so it’s always nice when we can locate these individuals so we make sure they don’t victimize anyone else,” said Lt. Randy Reynolds, Wichita Police Department.
The suspect, Benton Baskin, was arrested yesterday on suspicion of forcible rape, aggravated kidnapping and aggravated sodomy.
Police tell KSN the case should be presented to the district attorney’s office for formal charges within the next couple of days.
