WICHITA, Kansas – It is one thing for a kid from Goddard to just make it in the big leagues, but now, Derek Norris can claim to be one of the best.
Norris, the Oakland A’s catcher, has been selected to be a member of the American League All-Star team.
Back home, the folks are pretty proud of a hometown All-Star.
It includes his father Russell Norris.
He is the owner at All-American Automotive in Wichita.
On Monday, Russell was busy answering questions about his son, the Major League Baseball All-Star.
“Yeah you know what, I’m having a hard time trying to get back to the text messages and the phone calls. It’s just been a busy day.”
His son, Derek, is in his third season in the major leagues.
He plays for the Oakland A’s and leads American League catchers in nearly every offensive category.
That is why he is an All-Star.
“I don’t even know if it’s still set in. It seems like it happened too quickly. And from the first time I saw his name on an All-Star ballot for the first time down in Texas at the end of April until now, I don’t know if it’s set in. It’s very exciting. I’m very for him.”
Norris played high school baseball for the Goddard Lions. His head coach was Tom Campa.
“You know, I saw him ever since he was in the eighth grade, and I knew he had some talent. Teams avoided him in high school, and I didn’t want to throw BP to him anymore because he hit the ball so hard,” said Campa.
Meanwhile, Russell Norris will be taking some time off from work.
He and his wife, Jackie, have a trip planned for next week.
They’re definitely going to Minneapolis to see their son in the All-Star Game.
“Absolutely. Yeah we are. It’s an easy drive. How can you pass it up?”
