GARDEN CITY, Kansas – Saint Catherine hospital and Central Care Cancer Center, along with other regional partners, worked together to create Heartland Oncology in an effort to make care more accessible to cancer patients.
“Which really does bring an entire grass roots effort,” said St. Catherine President and CEO Scott Taylor. “[It’s a] collaboration from primary care through the specialists in the region to the local hospitals across Western and Central Kansas.”
To accommodate the push for more care the hospital is making about ten million dollars worth of improvements. They’ll expand up one story and out to the West, adding about 18,000 square feet to the existing cancer center.
They’ll also make some changes to their partner cancer center at Saint Rose in Great Bend.
“It’s a great opportunity to see St. Catherine expanding their services and medical services, for not only the community, but for Western Kansas.
Collaboration with groups like the Midwest Cancer Alliance will bring new clinical trials to the area. Patients will have access to advanced treatment options too, care they would otherwise have to travel to Wichita or Denver for.
“The closer we can push cancer care to home, the better experience the patient will have, the better support they’ll have from their family,” Taylor said.
