4th of July celebrations across the nation

PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania (NBC News) – In America’s birthplace, Philadelphia recognized Independence Day with a parade and ceremony, even as remnants of Hurricane Arthur forced people to take cover.

Vice President Joe Biden reflected on the principles of equality that united the nation’s founding fathers 238 years ago.

President Obama celebrated from the White House with a naturalization ceremony where he emphasized the important role of immigrants in history.

As Arthur moves toward Canada, cities throughout the north east are rescheduled fireworks shows and festivities.

Troops in Afghanistan cut through a fourth of July cake, and in Kuwait they celebrated with a 10k run.

Rio de Janeiro even recognized America’s birthday bathing its iconic Christ the Redeemer statue in red white and blue.

And later tonight, friends and families around the country will end their celebrations by watching spectacles illuminating the night sky.
