Lightning strikes twice, shocking firefighters

GUILFORD, Vermont – Seven firefighters were checked for injuries after lightning struck nearby as they battled a blaze in Guilford, Vermont Wednesday.

According to a posting on the Guilford Volunteer Fire Department’s Facebook page, firefighters from that company and others were working on a structure fire around 4 p.m. when lightning hit in close proximity.

“We do know that it struck the wellhead of the house outside — metal sticking out of the ground — blew the top off and at about that same time a few firefighters were inside or around the house and felt shocks, electrical charges,” Guilford Volunteer Fire Lt. Bevan Quinn said.
