NEW ORLEANS (AP) — One person remains in critical condition as a result of a weekend gunfight on Bourbon Street in New Orleans.

Police said nine people were hit when shots rang out at about 2:45 a.m. Sunday. Five remained hospitalized Monday at LSU Hospital. Four were in stable condition. One was in critical.

Images captured from a surveillance camera above a bar showed people running down the street in the chaos of the shooting.

The shooting happened as New Orleans prepares for a major summer tourist event: The annual Essence Festival opens Thursday and runs through the Fourth of July weekend.

Police chief Ronal Serpas says there will be a strong police presence in tourist-heavy locations like the French Quarter over the holiday weekend.

Identities of those wounded have not been released.
