1 dead, 2 injured in home explosion near Garden City

PLYMELL, Kansas – A home explosion in southwest Kansas has killed a 17-year-old boy and critically injured two others in the residence.

Finney County Sheriff Kevin Bascue reports the explosion happened around 5:30 p.m. Saturday near the town of Plymell, about 12 miles south of Garden City.

Three people were inside the home at the time.

Firefighters found the body of 17-year-old Spencer Unruh in the basement of the home.

His 14-year-old brother, Riley, and his mother, Kelly, were taken to St. Catherine’s Hospital in Garden City and later flown to a hospital in Wichita.

Their conditions are unknown at this time.

The father of the boys was not home at the time of the explosion.

State fire marshals are on the scene working to determine the cause of the explosion.

The explosion did cause significant damage to a neighboring house, but no one was home at the time.
