Man dies following police chase in Emporia

EMPORIA, Kansas – An Emporia man is dead after crashing into utility pole during a police chase.

Around 2:30 a.m. Sunday, police tried to pull the driver over for running a stop sign in the area of 9th and Commercial streets. The driver, 20-year-old Javier Escobedo, didn’t stop for the officers and led them on chase that ended when his car hit a utility pole.

Escobedo was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
