Cardboard Boat Races

BANGOR TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — Nine people have braved the Kawkawlin River in boats made out of cardboard.

The Kawkawlin River Watershed Association was sponsor of the inaugural Cardboard Boat Races on Saturday.

The Bay City Times says that cheering crowds were on hand as five boats cast off from the shore.

The site is in Bay County’s Bangor Township, about 90 miles northwest of Detroit.

The boat “Kid-n-Me” made it across first, paddled by Amy Mueller and her 9-year-old son Justin.

Organizers say proceeds from the event will benefit the Child Abuse and Neglect Council Great Lakes Bay Region.
