WICHITA, Kansas – For weeks, KSN has been going inside the Wichita VA to ask about long waiting times for veteran care.
Today, the director of the VA responded.
“The Wichita VA Medical Center is making changes to better serve Veterans,” says Wichita VA Director Francisco Vazquez. “We will continue to actively examine our systems and determine where improvements need to be made. Where we have found areas in need of improvement we have taken immediate action to ensure our patients are safe and receive appropriate care, and we will continue to do so. We honor our Veterans and will continue to provide them with the best possible care that they have earned and richly deserve.”
But for one former nurse at the VA, she says she wants more of an explanation. Joan worked for years as a nurse at the VA, and she is calling for a full investigation into the care by doctors at the Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center.
“I really want to thank KSN for the investigation. There continues to be long wait times for care at the VA, Wichita,” says Joan. “But there is more to the story. Much more.”
Joan says it is her opinion that the care by doctors at the hospital is substandard.
“My husband is a veteran,” says Joan. “And there is no way I will let him get care there.”
Joan claims doctors oversee medical internists who are learning the trade. But she also says, as a nurse, she has witnessed substandard care.
“Many, many times,” says Joan. “I just want people to know, our veterans deserve better.”
Many of the claims by Joan are serious in nature. KSN is fact-checking those claims and looking to substantiate what is happening, before making those claims public.
KSN continues to investigate long wait times for care at the VA as well.
