Small plane crashes in Barton County

GREAT BEND, Kansas – A small plane crashed in Barton County Sunday morning, killing both people on board.

The Pottier P.70 crashed in a field near the intersection of NW 40 Road and NW 30 Avenue just north of Great Bend, just before noon.

The victims have been identified as 49-year-old Roger Brining and 24-year-old Daniel Bishop.

The Kansas Highway Patrol said Brining, a father of three and wheat farmer out of Great Bend, was flying the plane. Family members tell KSN that Bishop, a friend of one of Brinig’s daughters, was riding along when the plane malfunctioned. A witness told troopers the plane nearly missed his home.

“He saw the aircraft angling upward to gain altitude,” said Trooper James Robinson. “He finished what he was doing on his property. He noticed the sound of the aircraft getting close to his property. He turned around to look and see the aircraft coming directly towards where he lives and then within a few minutes the plane went down in the field.”

The FAA has been notified. There is no word yet on what caused the plane to crash. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
