ST. LOUIS (AP) — Both U.S. senators from Missouri say VA leaders need to be held accountable after reports that Veterans Affairs health care centers in four Midwestern states maintained secret, unauthorized waiting lists of veterans, some who waited for care for more than 90 days.

VA officials acknowledged the lists in letters to U.S. Sens. Pat Roberts and Jerry Moran, both of Kansas. The letters confirm unauthorized lists at facilities in Kansas, Missouri, Illinois and Indiana. Of those, the longest waiting list was in Wichita, Kan., with 385 veterans.

The letters cite 71 on waiting lists for treatment at four centers in Missouri.

Republican Sen. Roy Blunt calls the treatment of veterans “unacceptable and intolerable.” A spokeswoman for Sen. Claire McCaskill says the Democrat is seeking additional feedback directly from veterans.
