WICHITA, Kansas – Get ready for a big political slugfest in Kansas.
U.S. Congressman Mike Pompeo could face a serious challenge from Todd Tiahrt.
There have been rumors for months.
“Well, Tiahrt did not lose by a lot when he ran for senate,” says Jeff Jarman, WSU political expert. “He (Tiahrt) lost to Jerry Moran, after both enjoyed successful careers in Congress.”
Jarman says there could be a lot of money spent on the race for the 4th District Congressional in Kansas.
The Koch brothers backed Todd Tiahrt in 2010 when he ran for Senate.
KSN reached out to Todd Tiahrt this week.
“I remain concerned about the 4th District,” says Tiahrt. “I am not ruling out running.”
If Tiahrt does run, expect a very conservative race. Govtrack.us shows analysis of Mike Pompeo and Todd Tiahrt as members of Congress for the 4th District in Kansas.
The Tiahrt record scews more conservative.
“I really think, yes, this could be a bit of a run to the right,” says Jarman. “I think that the base of primary voters in this district expect a very conservative candidate.”
KSN reached out to Mike Pompeo and his office.
Pompeo did not offer any comment on whether or not Tiahrt would run, but a spokesperson said Pompeo would continue to work hard for the people of the 4th District.
Tiahrt has until Monday to file for office if he does want to run.
“The challenge will be whether he can create a message that encourages republicans to vote against their conservative incumbent in congress,” says Jarman. “This is going to be fascinating run. Assuming it happens.”
