POLK COUNTY, Florida (WFLA) – A Florida middle school student is facing a felony charge for poisoning his teacher.
The 14-year-old boy is accused of putting hand sanitizer in his teacher’s water.
According to the arrest affidavit, Ana Morejon, a teacher at Crystal Lake Middle School went to talk to the dean, leaving her students including the boy in the classroom. When she was outside in the hallway, the kids lined up to go to lunch.
When Morejon came back, she took a sip of water from her cup but noticed it tasted “funny.” She took another sip, smelled it and realized it smelled of hand sanitizer.
Morejon went to Bartow Regional Medical Center soon after – she wasn’t feeling well. She had a headache and a stomachache, according to the PCSO report. Her fiance, Clarke Balmond says she still doesn’t feel well.
“At this point, she’s still under a doctor’s care, She’s not feeling well. She’s experienced some gastritis, and migraine headaches,” said Balmond.
Witnesses told deputies, the teen squirted Zep’s Professional Hand Sanitizer into the teacher’s cup. The teenager was arrested and taken to the Juvenile Assessment Center.
Sheriff Grady Judd says toying with teachers will not be tolerated.
“The thought that someone would do such to a teacher is reprehensible,” said the sheriff. “And here’s the bottom line. You’re going to respect your teachers. You’re going to be respectful to them at all times. And if you violate the law, we’re going to arrest you. There’s not going to be any warnings when it comes to assaulting teachers, trying to poison a teacher, hitting a teacher.”
The student is not being named because he is a juvenile.
