GREAT BEND, Kansas – Great Bend has been aware of a housing shortage for a long time.
“Housing has always been an issue,” says Jan Peters, President of the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce
Now, tax credits are helping the community get some housing relief.
Overland Property Group, based out of the Kansas City area, will be the contractor.
“We really feel like, the demand in that community to be honest with you is off the charts, the lack of housing in a community can be one of the most detrimental things to them so we really feel like it’s a positive, because we found an area of demand and need,” said Matt Gillam, V.P. of Development at Overland Property Group.
The new apartment complex will be built on a lot across the street from Walmart. It will be the first new apartment complex in Great Bend in over 30 years.
Construction starts in September with a targeted completion date for next May, exciting local leaders.
“It’s just so important for so many reasons,” says Peters.
Hoping the apartments will spur economic growth and encourage more people to choose Great Bend.
“We have such an active young professionals group here and that always seems to be one of the issues, when someone first moves here housing is key for them,” said Peters.
The first phase of apartments is set to be completed in May of 2015, with construction on two more buildings to begin after that.
