WSU baseball team grounds Redbirds 2-1

NORMAL, IL – The WSU baseball team scored a pair of runs in the fifth inning to beat Illinois State 2-1 in game two of a three-game series on Friday.

Wichita State starter Same Tewes threw six innings and gave up one run on five hits with one walk and five K’s. Cale Elam picked up the save with two shutout innings.

Tanner Dearman led off the fifth with a walk and moved to second on Erik Harbutz’s single to right. After a walk to Casey Gillaspie loaded the bases, Dayne Parker’s bunt single scored Dearman to tie the game at one. Gillaspie wound up scoring on a wild pitch to give WSU the lead.

The Shockers and Redbirds will close out the series on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
