AKRON, Ohio (WKYC) – Newborn twin girls in Akron, Ohio are defying the odds and capturing hearts around the world.
A picture of them holding hands at birth is going viral.
Doctors at Akron Children’s Hospital took the picture just moments after the girls were born.
It’s a happy ending to a complicated pregnancy.
For one of the first times, Bill and Sarah Thistlewaite are holding their new born twin girls.
Little Jenna is only 3 lbs and 11 ounces.
Her twin, Jillian is 3 lbs 14 ounces.
“It’s amazing. I’ve been waiting. I got to hold Jenna the other day but to actually hold her like this is, I’ve been waiting since Friday to do it,” said Bill.
“We made it through. It’s just an overwhelming feeling,” said Sarah.
Jenna and Jillian are tiny miracles who have captured the hearts of millions around the world when they grabbed each others’ hand just moments after they were born.
“I never thought that it was going to blow up into something like this. One of my friends lives in Australia and she texted me last night and said I was on her Australian news,” giggled Sarah.
Born at 33 weeks, the girls have defied the odds of a condition called mono, mono – meaning they shared an amniotic sac and placenta.
It’s dangerous and very rare type of pregnancy with a low survival rate.
It only happens in one out of 10,000 pregnancies.
