Community honors retiring Haysville teacher

HAYSVILLE, Kan. — A longtime orchestra teacher got the send-off of a lifetime Thursday night.

Donna Hansen has been a teacher for 41 years and 36 of those were spent in the Haysville school district.

This year will be her last and Thursday night she led a 5th grade performance for the last time in her career.

Dozens of Hansen’s former students and parents joined a crowd of about a thousand people at Nelson Elementary to honor the beloved teacher.

Mrs. Hansen said it has been her pleasure to teach her passion.

“The kids have touched my life,” said Hansen. “That will be in my treasure chest forever – of memories – if, as long as I remember things, you know, as we get older – smiles.”

“I would have the kids all those years so I would see them blossom, both musically and, you know, mature,” said Hansen.

Hansen has taught some families of students for generations.

With retirement, she hopes to savor her morning coffee and get around to house work later. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
