WICHITA, Kansas – Wichita police are investigating after a 1-year-old baby boy was found in a closet that was 90 degrees.
It happened Tuesday morning at the Twin Rivers Apartments in the 2300 block of North Somerset.
A maintenance worker found the infant when he was called to work on an air conditioner.
He heard a sound coming from a closed closet and opened it to find a 1-year-old child crying.
The child was thirsty and had a wet diaper.
“It was like 90 degrees inside the closet, they took the boy, comforted him, and then called 911,” said Lt. Alan Prince, Wichita Police Department.
About 30 minutes after police arrived, the mother came home and said that she leaves the child in the closet with a mattress while she takes her husband to work.
“We explained over and over that she can’t do that. Apparently, she does this on a daily basis,” added Lt. Prince.
Right now, the child is in the custody of his grandparents.
At this point, the mother is not in police custody.
“We’re going to try to get her some help through the state, and this is an example where she needs to be educated as a parent the rights and wrongs of raising a child. They’ll make sure she gets the proper information and help she needs,” said Prince.
Neighbors wonder how it could happen.
“I would never leave a child that young alone for an extended period of time.”
Brad Burris lives in the same complex and says it is a great place to live, but he says he is shocked and horrified a baby would be left alone.
“Well, no it’s not okay. She should know better. It’s unfortunate that a mother can’t take better care of her children.”
