Heat causes power outages across Wichita

WICHITA, Kansas – The heat on Sunday caused widespread power outages in Sedgwick County.

Westar Energy reported that more than 11,000 customers were affected by a power outage.

Crews worked throughout the night and that number has since dropped.

Westar says extreme temperatures caused small power resources to overload.

“The extreme temperature fluctuation is causing small circuits to overload. It is like a circuit breaker in your house, and the system is becoming too great,” said Leonard Allen, Westar Energy.

Drivers had to rely on Wichita police to direct traffic at several intersections.

Homeowners had to find a convenient way to entertain guests and keep the kids cool.

“Had all these people over to barbecue and now we have to do it all out on the grill instead of warming up everything inside, but it’s ok,” said Brian Garcia.
