HARVEY COUNTY, Kan. — Several grass fires that flared up along Highway 50 near Walton in Harvey County Wednesday afternoon have since been extinguished. The fires were believed to have possibly been started by a passing train.

The smoke from the fires covered the highway, reducing visibility drastically.

Trains were also halted in the area due to crews working near the tracks. They have since been allowed to continue running.

Fire fighters in the area requested traffic control because of several close calls with vehicles not being able to see the roadway.

Marion County and Peabody firefighters were also called in to assist.
